Fleshing Out (posted on 17/06/2012)

Having just read through a stack of British Vogues, which have accumulated over the last couple of months, I felt inclined to write a critical piece in response to one of the articles entitled "Flashing Blades" by Tilly Macalister-Smith. She enthuses about the fact that "shoulders can be relied on to add wow factor." She reasons that to expose the shoulder is an alternative to those that are not blessed with a lithe frame as those latter can work the midriff trend this spring-summer (as showcased on the Prada catwalk).
Let's be frank, this is bullocks. In order to showcase the midriff or shoulders, one must have defined that specific body part as it obviously shines a particular light on it when it is completely exposed.
Shoulders are not a flat object seen from on top only. But they are animate. Once exposed, all sides need to look great. That is obvious, right?
So just because the front of your shoulders is acceptable, do not fall into the trap of exposing all as the backside of one's shoulders, the shoulder blades, need to look the part too. If there is too much flesh, fat, etc. not good. Or lo and behold, if the side of your arms is on the chunky side, again do not haste into the bare-the-shoulders-so-called-Vogue-UK-trend.
Baring body parts is always tricky if you are not on the lithe, athletic side. But there are ways to work even such a trend into your look. If you choose a bare front with a bit of chiffon on the back -be it a scarf, top-, then you have halfed your issues and won't get a cold.
Also, I would advise anyone with a breast size that is bigger than a B+ (or small C), not to do a bare all shoulder. Better beautiful than looking hideous.
