Umbrelliant! (posted on 04/03/2012)

According to Grazia UK it is the season of the 'umbrella' skirt with its 'mass appeal' due to its flattering shape. Grazia states that at first these skirts appeared cumbersome to the fashion editors but after seeing several options, they started falling in love with this 'umbrella' skirt as it 'flared into a shape that creates the impression of super-slim legs', Dear chicette, here it is important to bear in mind that Grazia is a magazine that advertises celebrity stories shaped by fashion news. Not the other way round. So it is no surprise to me that an A-line skirt is mistaken for an umbrella skirt. It is clear that the headline 'Wear your umbrella' causes more stir than a Vogue headline such as 'The A-line skirt is back'. Also -and this is almost more important than the fact that the headline incorporates a completely made up name for a fashion garment (in order to be cute, to be funny, to be unique or simply to refer to the fact that we are in England, where it is raining constantly, nobody knows)- dear chicette do not believe this nonsense that a so-called 'umbrella' skirt or rather A-line skirt is flattering to the body creating slim legs. Every A-line skirt -with or without pleats- draws attention to two point on your body: 1. the waist and 2. the legs as everything else in between is hidden under fabric. The legs are therefore under extra scrutiny. In any case, legs and stomach need to fairly small/slim in order to give the very flared shape of the skirt a balance and harmony. The bigger the waist/stomach and the bigger the legs/calves, the more you will look like a walking tree stump. Never a good thing.
