"Work Cures Everything" - Henri Matisse
This art work reminds me a lot of a moment in my life where I also looked out of a window. Inside I was bed-bound but writing which helped me live, which helped me express myself, which helped me speak.
My time at Tate has not left me. Memories of good times never do. There is something quite refreshingly healthy in this statement: 'work cures everything'. We Germans are laughed about in cultural jokes for being frustrating workaholics solely enjoying football when there is a match but otherwise staying focused on work. And it is true, work is the answer to many things. Some like to call it a cultural phenomenon. I would like to call it having a healthy rhythm in life as work takes the mind off of what may not be of importance such as an illness and rather focuses the mind on the task at hand. In this sense it is like a natural cure, which can never be underestimated.
I few years ago I read an insightful book -I read other insightful books in the meantime too!- which made me think of true excellence. It extrapolated that through repeated work, one gets better and better and eventually - the writer gave a number which has left my memory at this moment in time, so please dear reader excuse me- one reaches a standard of excellence. That said, one obviously needs to practice and put in the hours day after day after day.
Through work one gets better after all.
