According to US Vogue's Sarah Mower in her article The New Normal in the July issue, fall fashion seems to have acquired a "sense of humor". Surprising? Maybe to her. Shocking to me as previously mentioned in my blog post Fall Astray http://www.thechiccritic.com/2012/08/fall-astray-jacobs-vuitton.html .
She calls it a "fashion explosion" literally in terms of size and dimension. Take a look at the two looks above. The very top shows an Alexander McQueen creation and below is a look from Comme des Garcons by Rei Kawakubo. The top was described by Mower as "a humongous pink mountain of organza undulating across the stage suddenly looking stunningly, ridiculously beautiful". The worst comes three sentences after, she states as a matter of fact, "and us actually liking it".
Who is this ominous "us", this plural pronoun that indicates more than a few people, a crowd, having positive feelings about something?
Or isn't it rather a case of an editor sitting in on a usually spectacular show which takes you the moment you step near the stage, take your seat and begin the experience literally on a ride. This probably resulted -as all exciting moments do- in a rush of endorphins to the brain, which gave the said editor a rush of happy feelings making her believe what she was seeing was beautiful when actually she was just feeling extra-ordinarily happy and excited.
My personal opinion is that all fashion needs to be taken with a pinch of salt.
Some will fascinate, excite and bring you momentary joy, which is wonderful, similar to a movie experience. If it can elicit feelings of anger, joy, excitement or even confusion then it has done its job: to move you.
But when it comes to fashion and proclaiming that there is a New Normal then I must declare that I reject this New Normal, which to me is neither wearable nor chic.
