Chicless Shoulder (posted on 11/11/2011)

Everyone should know by now that I am a silk lover at heart. Silk is luxe, light and totally me. Further, it seems to accentuate whatever color its in as well as look gorgeously beautiful. Things go wrong though, if this luxurious fabric is cut a bit too leisurely. Alber Elbaz at Lanvin, whom I usually adore to a T, went a bit too far it seems!
The top picture is of a dress from Elbaz's fall 2011 ready-to-wear collection for Lanvin. The color of the silk is adorable as well as the styling of the gloves, sandals and necklace. But lets focus on the draping of the shoulder part for a moment. Where the bodice is tailored and beautifully slim-fitting, the shoulders seem to have been draped so loosely that they can only hint at the bulge of a big shoulder underneath. And then the most outward bulge or rather crease where the fabric has been bent to go round the shoulders has undertones of armour to me but lacks the coolness of a leather jacket or a fitted military jacket with shoulder pads. Overall I love the fabric, color and bottom bit of the dress but once my eye moves upwards I seem to resist donning this partly wonderful ensemble or recommending it to anyone else.
The Lanvin top below is created in a similar style yet it looks that much more luxe as it is done in a simple way rather than in the more elaborate over-complicated style of the dress. I also find the color very alluring and oh so chic. So if you want to try some draping, go for a simpler style and see how it works in your pre-existing wardrobe.
