Here is a lesson in honing the perfect rock chic look as seen on the Balmain spring 2012 runway. Take a plain, loose shirt or blouse (as long it is baggy and androgynous), iron it immaculately, then pair it with a skin-tight mini preferably in an elaborate design with stitching, embellishment or extravagant colour and finally don a pair of boots (in winter) or heels/sandals (in summer). To put the dot on the "i", throw on a dark fur vest/stole/coat nonchalantly. Voila! Easy rock chic style without looking like you are trying too hard.
My take on Balmain's new creative director,Olivier Rousteing, who replaced Christophe Decarnin, is that pick and choose from his western influenced collection. Not every item is a must have, some are edgy extremes rather befitting for runway couture and not street-style. Nevertheless, I think his aesthetic is in line with Decarnin who has been taking Balmain on a sexy, edgy rollercoaster of cool. Different, yet confident, modern and stylish.
