My friend recently asked me for some style advice. She was wondering if a sweater could be dressed up to look stylish and chic?

This, dear reader, is a current fashion theme. As most designers have incorporated sweaters into their fall 2011 collections. There were chunky knits on one side of the spectrum and the other side was dominated by the sleekness of a thin 1ply cashmere sweater top.

The sweater question is a tricky fashion conundrum as the look can quickly verge on a gym style gone wrong when combined with unsuitable trousers/skirt or shorts. My general advice is to steer clear of any kind of sweater if you are far from being athletic or skinny.

My favourite sweater look comes from Michael Kors' spring 2011 collection, where he showed the model Freja wearing a grey (the new black!) sweater and a golden palazzo pant with a medium thin cappuccino brown belt and leather/cork wedges. An absolutely genius look as it can work for day as well as for evening. Effortless chic glamour!
